Today, phone cases are extremely popular, with a strong worldwide demand and new products every year.

Some figures? Samsung Galaxy S III sales surpassed 20 million, 100 days after the handset launched in May. Its most important competitor, Appple iPhone, is a must-have in many countries.

Often, phone cases serve more as a fashion statement than a method of protection for the phone.

In the beginning: simple design

Early cell phone cases were mainly simple designs. Often only available in black, gray, or white, the initial phone case styles served to protect a phone from damage and were not viewed as an accent or accessory to the phone user’s style.

Many old phone cases were leather or a tough plastic, with plastic inserts sewn in to act as a shield against liquid damage.

The basic, functional appearance of early cell phone cases reflected the early use of cell phones. Cell phones were originally introduced to the public as an emergency or safety device and not really marketed as an everyday use item. As such, the case offerings, if available, were limited and often unoriginal.

Once the idea of cell phones caught on with the public, manufacturers began to add more features and designs. The way people used cell phones changed and the introduction of smartphones changed the landscape even more.

The addition of Internet capabilities to cell phones brought the devices into the market in a major way.

As cell phones became a must-have item, fashion designers began to take notice. Feeling that fashion conscious consumers would not be satisfied with basic phone cases, designers began to make attractive cases for cell phones.

Designers have even designed cell phone cases as a part of their seasonal fashion line. They match the case’s pattern to the theme of their collection or offer a specific case with a certain outfit or signature collection piece.

Some designers make cases for various models, while others stick to specific phone models or manufacturers. Currently, the iPhone and Droid models are popular platforms for fashion-inspired cases by popular designers.

Kate Spade of New York, for example, makes various cases for the iPhone. Current designs vary and include a composition notebook-styled case and a wood-grain textured case. All designs feature Kate Spade`s signature in the classic style of the label.

Dannijo, a jewelry fashion brand, has a bevy of jewel-inspired phone cases available to the public.

The Henrik, for example, is a kaleidoscope of jeweled-patterns, based on some of the jeweler’s actual designs.

With jewelry, prices can raise quickly. The iphone cover ‘Golden Delicious’ is made of diamonds and 140 grams of gold.

Oh, you need something more affordable?

Marc Jacobs, the famous American designer, has also designed cell phone cases. Marc, for example, was a python-printed gray case made for the iPhone 4G series. The designer’s signature was embossed in yellow print along the side of the case.

Diane von Fürstenberg, the Belgian-American designer known for her wrap dress and other clothing items for women, designed cell phone cases for her line and some high-end outlets, such as Bloomingdales. Her cases featured vintage-style prints, with bright colors and silhouetted symbols.

Another example, you can compare Ella Moss collection on e-commerce sites like CoutureCandy.com and guess the sources of inspiration for her phone cases.

Thomas Jacob Hilfiger, known for his lifestyle clothing brand company, Tommy Hilfiger, has worked with cell phone companies on designs and made several phone cases. Hilfiger also makes wristlets and other bag-style items for cell phone carrying.

For the first time since several decades in Paris, a haute-couture expert transmitted his knowledge through a workshop opened to non-professionals, as Coco Chanel did in the 50′s.

Parisian fashion history, draping on dummies, and a course followed by a couple of practical exercises to know how convert a draw in a concrete garment.

Attendees received a lot of advice about how launch his own collection or how manage his career.

François Lavergne and Didier Castelnau, both administrators of Fashion Federation, enjoyed the great success of this first workshop, as Izet Curi who “is pleased to have transmitted his knowledge“

The last day, everybody visited St-Germain district and its plenty of Fashion shops. Finishing this 2-day workshop by a drink at the Emporio Armani Caffe and a tour in Izet ‘s studio.

Workshop will be focused on pattern drafting and draping. A level certification will be delivered at the end of the workshop.
